“As odd as it might seem, I have found that the more I know myself, the more I have changed. I believe that the capacity for change and growth is within most people.
To unlock and mobilise this potential, I enter counselling relationships as a genuine person in a personal relationship with another unique individual, endeavouring to identify their processes (thoughts, feelings, emotions etc), to nurture their self-awareness and self-acceptance with the goal of facilitating sustainable change and growth”
"What's Happened..?" is a very different question to "What's wrong with me?"
This important difference reflects the approach at What's Happened.
In essence, the client is the expert in the therapeutic relationship because they have their own unique experiences which have uniquely impacted them.
The approach is to understand how clients might have been impacted and to facilitate a way to help clients make sense of these experiences more clearly. There is no 'diagnosis' or medication .
This is not an exclusive service and is for everyone. I have worked with male survivors of abuse, individuals coping with cancer and their families and much more.
There is however, a focus on business leaders and senior leaders of organisations in the private, public and third sectors.
As a business consultant, I saw from the outside looking in how organisation leaders are increasingly struggling. COVID, the 'cost of Living crisis' and new ways of interacting with customers are some of the reasons that are exacerbating this struggle.
I have witnessed a reluctance to seek support for mental well-being. Those that sought help simply didn't know where to go.
Furthermore, with mental well-being in the workplace high on many organisation's agenda, I sense a sentiment that these services do not apply to the senior individuals because of their seniority.
Whats-happened endeavours to fill this perceived gap and misconception.
I started out working in The City in a role that led me across Western Europe and latterly to Moscow where I opened up our offices for the Former Soviet Union.
As glamorous as that may sound, it was exhausting.
A year off led me to Botswana where I stayed for 9 years. Living in a mud hut, I created a community project for orphans & vulnerable children impacted by the HIV/AIDS pandemic. There was a lot of vulnerability within the community stemming from experiences of significant trauma, long-term illness, bereavement and much more. Being exposed to this on an almost daily basis has grounded me well.
The project has been handed over to the local community and numerous legacy projects continue.
I returned to the UK in 2011 and set up my own business support consultancy. Simultaneously, I was approached by former colleagues and associates who 'just wanted to chat'. I wanted to make sure that I was saying the right thing which led me to undertake a Masters in Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy.
You may be at the point of acknowledging that there is something on your mind / causing distress - being aware is often the first hurdle, and also the biggest hurdle.
Thinking about making contact can be more intense than the reality of making contact. It is a massive step that will be acknowledged, respected and treated with the dignity & confidentiality it deserves.
Perhaps the most important part of therapy is the ability to get on with each other and I'd be happy to answer any questions about how this might work
